The Peter A. A. Berle Environmental Integrity Award
The Century Foundation has established, in cooperation with the National Audubon Society, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Environmental Defense Fund, the Environmental Law Section of the New York State Bar Association, and former colleagues of Peter A. A. Berle, a new award intended to recognize environmental integrity demonstrated by public officials and private citizens in the United States.
The Peter A. A. Berle Environmental Integrity Award will be given annually to up to two U.S. citizens who, through action or scholarship, provide innovative leadership in helping the United States and the world confront the challenges of climate change, renewable energy, depletion of the oceans, species extinction, air, water and soil contamination, and the urban environment. The winners will be selected by a panel that includes representatives of The Century Foundation and the leading environmental organizations that they have partnered with for this award.
Peter A. A. Berle, who died one year ago, was one of the pioneers who created and then led the modern environmental movement locally, nationally, and internationally. He believed that the environmental challenges facing mankind require creative thinking, principled action, commitment to the rule of law and social justice, and personal integrity in defense of those values. The Berle Environmental Integrity Award is intended to honor those public officials and private citizens who, by their conduct or scholarship, exemplify these qualities.
Nominations for the award, which includes a prize of $2,000, must be in writing and should be submitted via e-mail on or before February 1, 2009, to “Berle Environmental Integrity Award” at BerleAward@tcf.org. Nominations should include the information listed below and should provide relevant information in support of the nomination. The decision of the award panel is expected in April 2009.
