One of the most innovative features in the Washington NRDC office is the straw wall and door system pioneered by Stramit International. Straw (as distinct from hay) is a disposal problem in agricultural areas because it is burned in the open air, which causes severe local air quality problems. These are alleviated when the straw is put to another use, rather than burned. In addition, because straw walls are solid instead of hollow, they insulate sound and temperature better than traditional walls, making the office quieter and more comfortable.
