  • From the Ground Up: Environmental Racism and the Rise of the Environmental Justice Movement, by Luke W. Cole and Sheila R. Foster, (New York University Press, 2001). Find inspiration in the stories of ordinary people who changed national environmental laws through grassroots community activism.


  • The Environmental Research Foundation puts out Rachel's News, a free environmental health bulletin named after Rachel Carson. The site also offers a searchable library and a great networking tool: a geographical database of community environmental and health organizations.


  • The Environmental Justice Foundation's Activist Training Manual is an in-depth guide to organizing for environmental justice. Learn everything from how to write a press release to using a GPS system. The organization also provides advocacy training courses for community groups.


  • The Community Tool Box - Created and maintained by the Work Group on Health Promotion and Community Development at the University of Kansas, the Tool Box provides over 6,000 pages of practical information to support your work in promoting community health and development.


  • Taking Action: A Guide for You and Your Community - Published by the United Nations Environment Programme, this book is available both in print and online. It contains exhaustive chapters on organizing for community action and resources that communities can avail themselves of.
