New York City's Failing Public Education Campaign for Recycling

Most New York City residents are confused about which items the city’s curbside recycling program accepts, according to this June 2001 survey undertaken for NRDC by the Marist Institute for Public Opinion. Based on these results, NRDC recommends that New York City abandon its current ad campaign in favor of one that more effectively teaches New Yorkers about recycling-collection rules. NRDC also recommends that the city take additional steps to boost public familiarity with details of the recycling program, including distributing educational posters to all New Yorkers each year and expanding recycling education efforts in apartment houses, Housing Authority properties and New York City's 1,100 public schools.
