Smarter Business: Greening Advisor
Less-toxic cleaning and maintenance products
Almost all commonly used cleaning and maintenance products contain chemicals that can cause serious health effects, including respiratory ailments, skin irritation, neurological disorders, and even cancer.
Consider consulting with your local public health officials and product suppliers to determine the potential hazards of the cleaning and maintenance products your company buys, and inquire about alternatives. Where possible, consider purchasing products that have been certified by Green Seal. Another resource for information on product specifications and contract language is EPA’s Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Database .
You may also wish to consider phasing out the use of antibacterial soap in restrooms. Antibiotics in soap are unnecessary and may cause more harm than good, helping to create antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the environment.
