If you're a senior citizen . . . be careful. Global warming could pose special health risks.

True to its name, global warming will cause temperatures to rise. That's bad news for anyone vulnerable to heat-related illness. So if you plan to spend your golden years in Florida, you'll need to take extra precautions.

Warmer temperatures may lead to an increase in heat-related illnesses, and even heat-related deaths. The elderly will be particularly vulnerable because as we age, our bodies don't disperse heat as well. Also, seniors are more likely to suffer from underlying diseases that can be complicated by heat, or to take medications that leave them more vulnerable to heat. In addition, seniors are more likely to have difficulty perceiving temperature problems in a timely way.

Global warming will threaten seniors' health in at least two other ways. Increased heat may lead to more air pollution, which in turn will stress seniors' cardiovascular and respiratory systems. And warmer water will be more hospitable to water-borne diseases.
