The R/V Nathaniel B. Palmer icebreaker cruises the Antarctic Peninsula, collecting ocean floor sediment samples, which scientists use to build a record of ice shelf changes. These samples provide a 15,000-year history of climate shifts that help scientists understand the changes taking place today.
