After a 400-year cooling period, the Müller Ice Shelf is now receding, like others in the area. Ice shelves can be a sensitive indicator of rising temperatures. Evidence from sediment and glacial core samples indicates previous periods of warmth in Antarctica's history. However, present temperatures appear to be the warmest in 500 years.
