Research shows that diminishing polar ice directly affects the world's 22,000 polar bears. As the summer season lengthens, their dens may melt earlier, and their natural hibernation patterns may be interrupted. They are forced to travel further from their preferred icy habitat to hunt for food, and the area in which they can forage is decreased.
