Polar Thaw: Global Warming in the Arctic and Antarctic

Adelie penguins search for krill -- small shrimp-like crustaceans that serve as the staple of the penguins' diet -- along the sea ice edge. Krill develop under the seasonal pack ice where they feed on algae. Years of low sea ice may mean less krill, a problem for the many Southern Ocean species that rely on this food source, including whales. This penguin wears a radio transmitter that provides information on how long it takes to forage when there is less sea ice.
