Oil Spills
Number and Volume of Oil Spills in California Down but Bay Remains At Risk
Findings at a glance A broader view What you can do

Take action on the Bay Area's behalf. Here are some ways you can keep oil out of our waters.

  • Dispose of motor oil properly -- a significant amount of motor oil winds up in local waters. For the motor-oil recycling facility nearest you, call (800)CLEANUP and enter your zip code.

  • If you own a boat, learn how to handle fuel responsibly. The California Coastal Commission offers this information at www.coastal.ca.gov/ccbn/ccbndx.html.

  • Urge local and state legislators to require San Francisco Bay-specific oil-spill data to be published. See NRDC's Earth Action Center for contact information for your state legislators.

  • You'll find lots more Bay Area green-living tips in our Green Gate Green Guides. And to keep informed and take action on the latest issues affecting the Bay Area and the rest of California, join NRDC's California Activist Network.
