Making a Bequest to NRDC

The planet faces mounting challenges to its health in the 21st Century -- global warming, species extinction, unsustainable exploitation of natural resources. A bequest to NRDC helps ensure that we can continue to apply our legal and scientific expertise to safeguard the environment, protect public health and preserve precious natural resources in the years ahead.

By thoughtfully remembering NRDC in your estate plans, you can leave the legacy you wish for the world. At the same time, a bequest to NRDC -- a tax- exempt 501(c)3 charitable organization -- can help reduce or eliminate taxes which may be otherwise owed by your estate.

Giving through Your Will or Trust and Suggested Bequest Wording

With a gift to NRDC through your Will or Trust, you can provide for NRDC's future work for the environment.

A specific bequest allows you to leave a specified gift; it is usually in the form of a cash distribution. To make a specific bequest: "I give, devise and bequeath to the Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc., 40 West 20th Street, New York, NY 10011 the sum of $[insert amount here] to be used for its general purposes."

A residuary bequest allows you to leave a "remainder" or a percentage of your estate to NRDC. To leave a residuary: "I give, devise and bequeath to the Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc., 40 West 20th Street, New York, NY 10011 all [or insert % here] of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate, to be used for its general purposes."

A contingency bequest allows you to make your gift contingent on other circumstances. To make your bequest contingent: "If any of the above-named beneficiaries should predecease me, I hereby bequeath his or her share to the Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc., 40 West 20th Street, New York, NY 10011 to be used for its general purposes."

To avoid estate or inheritance taxes on your gift: "I direct that no estate or inheritance taxes be paid from the share of any property devised or bequeathed to the Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc."

If you already have a Will, you can use the suggested wording above to make a codicil that names NRDC a beneficiary of your estate.

For legal purposes, NRDC's corporate name is Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc. We are an IRS-approved 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organization; our tax exempt identification number is 13-2654926.
