Photo of the White Mountain National Forest

The highest mountains in the Northeast -- the Presidential Range -- are located in New Hampshire's scenic WHITE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL FOREST. Mounts Adams, Jefferson, Monroe and Madison all range above 5,000 feet, and Mount Washington tops 6,000.

Almost completely denuded by uncontrolled logging in the 19th century, this 800,000-acre Forest is now a popular destination for wilderness camping and hiking, with five designated wilderness areas. The Appalachian Trail runs through it, and there is an extensive network of other trails besides. Skiers flock to the Forest in the winter, which includes several world-famous ski resorts. The bulk of the Forest, however, is still subject to logging.
