NEW YORK, N.Y. (February 12, 2013) – New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Nirav Shah informed New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation today that the Department of Health’s Public Review of hydraulic fracturing will require additional time to complete due to the of complexity the issue and new science that needs to be included. This recommendation almost certainly substantially delays the Administration’s decision on whether or not to allow fracking in the State, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council.
A statement follows from Kate Sinding, Senior Attorney and Deputy Director of the New York Program at the Natural Resources Defense Council:
“Dr. Shah’s decision today to get all the facts before giving the green light to fracking in New York State is in the best traditions of preventive medicine.
“Governor Cuomo rightly promised not to advance fracking unless New Yorkers could be assured that it would not come at the expense of human health or the environment.
“Today’s decision is a key step in fulfilling that promise. It looks like New York will follow doctor’s orders.”
