Look for dogfights over energy now that Domenici is chair of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee. The New Mexico senator makes no bones about his pro-nuke, pro-oil agenda and has started 2003 by pushing for both drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the renewal of the Price-Anderson Act, which is essentially taxpayer-funded insurance for the nuclear industry in case of catastrophic accident. But fortunately, in another key Senate committee -- Environment and Public Works -- environmental watchdog Lincoln Chafee holds the swing vote. The League of Conservation Voters currently rates him among the greenest Republicans in the Senate.
