Alaska's sole representative in the House seems to yearn for the open road. Ever since Young was appointed chair of the Transportation Committee, he's been howling to double highway spending over the next six years. Environmentalists charge that Young wants to dump a lot more money into building new roads while short-changing public transit -- exactly what an ever sprawling nation doesn't need. Young has even tried to spin his plan as a boon for air quality, using the much debunked "more roads mean less congestion" theory.
