All statistics are for the U.S. per year (except where noted), and they paint a grim picture. The industry is the third-largest source, after chemical and steel manufacturing, of greenhouse gases; these emissions are expected to increase 100 percent by 2020. It is the fourth-largest source of dioxin emissions. The amount of timberland destroyed to feed the paper industry is projected to increase globally by 50 percent in the next 35 years.
