Ten-Year Objective
Transform the economy so 20 percent of U.S. energy comes from renewable sources and our buildings, communities and vehicles are 20 percent more energy-efficient.
2008 Victories
- Won a congressional measure extending tax credits for solar, wind and other renewable sources of energy.
- Secured a commitment from airlines to reduce their oil consumption through new efficiency measures and the use of sustainable biofuels.
- Helped win passage of a pioneering California law (SB 375) that will encourage cities to create more sustainable neighborhoods and transportation alternatives.
2009 Action Plan
We will spearhead the fight in Congress to pass legislation that will slash oil demand by 20 percent in ten years and speed the deployment of clean biofuels nationwide. We will fight for policies that support energy-efficient alternatives, such as vehicle electrification and rail transit, and help move sustainable fuels from the lab to commercial-scale production. We will be working with and, when necessary, pressuring the Obama Administration and Congress to raise fuel economy standards further and faster than the 2007 boost. Lastly, we will advocate federal and state legislation that fosters smart growth and drastically improves the energy efficiency of America's buildings and appliances.
