Curb Global Warming

"NRDC now boasts a more powerful climate arm than any other environmental group."
— Salon.com, profile of "Climate Warriors and Heroes"

Ten-Year Objective

Stave off climate upheaval by steadily reducing global-warming pollution in the United States and worldwide.

2009 Victories

  • Won passage of a global warming bill in the House of Representatives that cuts U.S. carbon emissions 83 percent by 2050 and funds massive investments in clean energy.
  • Spurred the adoption of a new national rule to reduce global warming pollution from new cars and trucks 30 percent nationwide by 2016.
  • Helped secure an international accord committing the United States and other polluting nations to detail the steps they are taking to reduce global warming emissions.

2010 Action Plan

We will spearhead the fight to pass comprehensive global warming and clean energy legislation in the Senate. We will closely track the progress of the United States and other countries in meeting their pollution-cutting commitments under the Copenhagen Accord as we build international support for future climate agreements and domestic action plans. We will work hand in hand with the Environmental Protection Agency as it crafts new regulations to curb carbon pollution from power plants and other big industries and defend against any congressional attempts to weaken the Clean Air Act. Finally, we will continue our campaign in and out of court to win strong federal and international protections for the polar bear and its rapidly melting Arctic habitat.
