Stem the Tide of Toxic Chemicals
- "What has always struck a chord for me, professionally, has been NRDC's sound and rational focus on preventive health measures based on absolutely solid understanding of the science. NRDC embraces completely the concept of 'good science for good decisions'."
- — Dr. Philip Landrigan, Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Environmental Health Sciences Center, Mount Sinai Medical Center
Ten-Year Objective
Begin reducing environmental disease by phasing out ten of the most dangerous families of toxic chemicals now found in consumer products.
2008 Victories
- Helped pass federal legislation banning the export of surplus toxic mercury.
- Compelled Wal-Mart to stop selling toxic flea collars and plastic bottles containing the chemical Bisphenol-A.
- Helped win a stricter federal standard for lead air pollution, the first tightening in 30 years.
2009 Action Plan
We will mobilize new consumer action as part of our campaign to phase out or sharply reduce the presence of some of the most toxic chemicals in household products. We will target the use of Bisphenol-A in food containers, infant formula and baby bottles, and boost pressure on major retailers to remove BPA-laden products from their shelves. We will continue to build public awareness of the dangers of toxic pesticides in flea-control products. Finally, we will maintain legal pressure on the Consumer Products Safety Commission until it enforces the nationwide ban on dangerous phthalates in toys and other children's products.
