Partnership for the Earth Campaign
Revive the World's Oceans
- "NRDC was a tremendous leader throughout the negotiation of the United Nations Fisheries Treaty."
- — Timothy E. Wirth, Undersecretary of State for Global Affairs
Ten-Year Objective
Protect and restore healthy populations of ocean wildlife through the creation of Marine Safe Zones at the state, national and international levels.
2008 Victories
- Won court orders and negotiated agreements that obligate the U.S. Navy to reduce harm to whales from dangerous mid-frequency sonar, fund research into its effects and comply with environmental laws in its use.
- Helped expand the network of marine protected areas along California to cover nearly 20 percent of the central coast.
- Won international agreements that restrict bottom trawling in millions of square miles of the Pacific Ocean.
2009 Action Plan
As we maintain pressure on the U.S. Navy to rein in deadly sonar, we will build international support for stricter controls on other harmful ocean noise, including seismic surveys and ship traffic. We will build on our success in California by securing underwater parks along the state's north-central coast, beginning the design process for the south coast and working to establish new marine-protected areas along the Oregon coast. We will fight to extend vital protections against bottom trawling in the Pacific and to save vulnerable ecosystems from other harmful fishing practices. We will continue advocating an international agreement for the sustainable management of fisheries and marine biodiversity.
