Our Picks June 2007
June 4, 2007 - June 11, 2007
- The Adventures of KAB Man - In this witty take on an earnest issue, a comically low-key superhero fights to Keep America Beautiful. KAB Man can fly "a little", but his superpowers seem to be otherwise limited to good-natured bantering. Three animated shorts tell the story of KAB Man's unlikely birth and early adventures in battling foes like Improper Recycling Habits.
- Good to Be Green - This free directory of sustainable products and accredited green building professionals contains resources for both residential and commercial builders. A great resource created by a former NRDC staffer!
- Encyclopedia of the Earth - This fully searchable, free encyclopedia contains thousands of articles by experts around the world on topics concerning the Earth and the environment. Unlike Wikipedia, only qualified experts may contribute articles, and all articles are reviewed by an editor before publication. Should you hunger for more interaction, visit the Earth Forum, where anyone can engage the encyclopedia's experts in a spirited discussion. Recent post: How much is New Jersey worth?
June 11, 2007 - June 18, 2007
- Your Life. Your Oceans. - Dive in and explore the true stories of 7 people - a fisherman, a chef, a beachgoer, a coastal dweller, a whale-watcher, a diver and a surfer -- who are eyewitnesses to the "silent" collapse of the world's oceans. Keep yourself up to date on the State of Our Seas, find great resources on what you can do to keep our oceans healthy, check out our critter game, submit your own diving or whale-watching photos, comment about your favorite beach, and much, much more. A new minisite from NRDC!
- It's Your Nature - Some more shameless self-promotion -- yet another great minisite from NRDC with a whole new take on the environment. This is your spot for videos, music downloads, blogs and green survival tips from celebrities and other good people living the green life. Go on, do something. It's your nature.
- Travels to the Edge - Join acclaimed photographer Art Wolfe on his journeys to capture some of the world's most stunning scenery. The television series will air this summer on public television (see the schedule here). On the website you can watch video clips from the series and see some of Art's glorious photography from Patagonia, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and other exotic realms.
June 18, 2007 - July 2, 2007
- Underwater Sculpture Gallery - An artist has created an artificial reef off the coast of Grenada made of life-sized sculptures, each depicting an aspect of Caribbean history. The website depicts each stage of the sculpting process as well as how the sculptures have succumbed to the ocean over time, with the environment taking over where the artist left off.
- Flying Elephants Foundation - This new foundation awards fellowships, akin to the MacArthur "genius" grants, to people in artistic and scientific disciplines "who have demonstrated singular creativity, passion, integrity and leadership and whose work inspires a reverence for the natural world." Get inspired by the stories and works of past recipients, including conservationist Sharon Matola, founder of the Belize Zoo, marine biologist and ocean advocate Carl Safina, and industrial landscape photographer Edward Burtynsky. Flying Elephant fellows are selected by a top-secret board; the foundation gets some of its money from the photography exhibit Ashes and Snow, and some from just plain folks.
- Vanishing Sea Ice - An amazing gallery of Arctic photos from National Geographic Magazine conjures up a dreamlike ice-blue world at risk from global warming. As photographer Paul Nicklen says, "An Arctic without ice would be like a garden without soil."
