Strong Fuel Efficiency Standards Put Country on Right Track

WASHINGTON (July 28, 2011) -- President Obama has put America on a path toward a cleaner future with an agreement on new pollution and fuel efficiency standards for cars and light trucks that will reduce gas consumption and cut carbon dioxide pollution, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council.

“This is the single biggest step the president can take to lower drivers’ gas bills and cut heat-trapping pollution at the same time," said Roland Hwang, transportation director at the Natural Resources Defense Council. “We will work with the administration and the auto industry to continue building the clean cars of the future.”

"These proposed standards can be met using well-known technologies such as better engines, lower-cost hybrids and electric cars,” Hwang said. “The Environmental Protection Agency, the Transportation Department, and California are committed to review progress in several years, and we will keep working for stronger standards that cut more pollution and save consumers even more money.”

“Today, everybody won -- not only drivers and auto workers but every man, woman and child who will be able to breathe cleaner air," Hwang said.  "Drivers can expect a greater range of choices in fuel efficient offerings without sacrificing performance while saving money over the life of their vehicle.”
