Confirmation of John Kerry as New Secretary of State Important for Action on Climate Change

The Senate today confirmed Senator John Kerry as the next Secretary of State. Senator Kerry understands that the impacts of climate change are severe and that taking action now is in the U.S. interest. He understands that deploying clean energy, reducing deforestation emissions, helping communities adapt to climate change, and action at home are critical components to U.S. engagement around the world. And he understands that these actions will benefit American citizens and communities around the world.

As NRDC’s President Frances Beinecke said:

“In nearly three decades in the U.S. Senate, John Kerry has distinguished himself as a champion for action against climate change, an advocate for the international cooperation we need to protect the natural resources of a changing world, and a visionary promoter of American jobs in the fast-growing market for clean energy worldwide.

At a time when neither conflict, economic uncertainty nor environmental disaster respect international borders, our nation’s top diplomat must advance American interests by helping to create a more peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. We take great confidence in Kerry's record of commitment and achievement and we look forward to working with him and his team.”

Action at home, combined with strong action internationally are the cornerstones for efforts to combat climate change. I’m sure that Senator Kerry will help lead strong action on international climate change. Addressing climate change is a national security, diplomatic, environmental, and economic priority.

We are glad that Senator Kerry is going to help combat this issue.
