NRDC at COP25: India Focused Events

India, the third largest carbon emitter, and highly vulnerable to climate change impacts, is key to solving the climate conundrum. NRDC and our partners are participating in several power-packed events drawing attention to critical issues such as the expansion of renewables, potential of countries to increase and deepen their commitments, and impacts of worsening air pollution on human health. Three of these where NRDC’s India team and partners will be active are highlighted below:

Countries meeting in Madrid this fortnight for the 25th session of the UN Climate Conference (COP25), have a steep but clear task ahead. Recent studies such as the UNEP’s Emission Gap Report highlight that the window to get the world on track to meet the 1.5 C temperature increase goal is rapidly narrowing. The world needs to not just deliver on the promise of the Paris agreement, but go well beyond to prevent catastrophic impacts of climate change.

Hosted by our partner, The Energy and Resources Institute, and the International Energy Agency, this event will highlight the progress and trends in the clean energy transition and long-term pathways to meet Paris Agreement goals. The event will draw on the latest IEA data for tracking energy transitions, presenting scenarios, and sectoral opportunities to deliver ambition in the energy sector.

Our latest publication, “The Road from Paris: India’s Progress Toward Its Climate Pledge,” will be released at the event. The issue brief covers India’s advancements in sectors such as renewable energy, transport, green buildings, and power sector. We also discuss India’s progress on energy access goals, climate resilience efforts, and progress on mitigating air pollution; and highlight India’s increasing footprint on international cooperation on climate action.

11th December, 10:30 a.m.-noon: “Gains in Green Finance to Curb Climate Change” Location: InterAmerican Development Bank/Americas Pavilion, Blue Zone.

Hosted by InterAmerican Development Bank, Rocky Mountain Institute, Coalition for Green Capital and NRDC, this discussion will focus on progress countries are making toward accelerating NDC implementation through green banks and other dedicated green finance facilities.

India, and many other countries, are planning, establishing, and capitalizing national and sub-national green banks for country-driven climate finance. The event will also present the Green Bank Design Platform which can be an invaluable resource for countries at all stages of green bank development. NRDC’s green finance expert Mr. Douglass Sims and NRDC partner – IREDA’s Mr. Chintan Shah will be speaking at the event. To address the need to expand the clean energy finance market in an inclusive manner, the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA)is setting up a dedicated, catalytic “green window”. Mr. Shah’s remarks at the event will focus on the establishment of the green window.

If you are at the COP, do join us for these important discussions. As the country delegates deliberate climate issues, the world is watching and hoping for constructive and ambitious outcomes.
