NRDC Supports Reauthorization and Expansion of the Clean Water State Revolving Fund

Statement by Nancy Stoner, director of the Clean Water Project, NRDC

WASHINGTON, DC (September 18, 2007) – U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, joined representatives from national organizations at a rally and press conference today on reauthorization and expansion of the Clean Water State Revolving Fund (SRF). The following is a statement by Nancy Stoner, director of the Clean Water Project at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC):

 

“The federal government’s investment in wastewater treatment and water resource protection over the 35 years since the Clean Water Act was passed in 1972 has brought tremendous progress in cleaning up our waterways, but we’re not done yet. Expansion and improved use of the Clean Water SRF is integral to securing future protection for our Nation’s waterways. We are urging Congress to step up federal investment in wastewater infrastructure during the next 10 years and to dedicate funding green infrastructure and other innovative strategies that could provide better environmental results and save money in the long run. Earlier this year, the House of Representatives passed the Water Quality Financing Act – now the Senate needs to demonstrate its commitment to increase funding and spend smarter so that the United States will ensure that there is clean, safe, usable water for the next generation.”
