NRDC President Beinecke Responds to EPA Finding on Greenhouse Gases

WASHINGTON (December 7, 2009) - The Environmental Protection Agency announced today that greenhouse gases "threaten the public health and welfare of the American people" and are "the primary driver of climate change." The findings set the stage for the regulation of carbon emissions and other heat-trapping gases.

Following is a statement by Frances Beinecke, President of the Natural Resources Defense Council:

"This action strikes a blow at climate change, treating greenhouse gases for what they are: pollution that threatens us all. The administration understands why we must cut carbon emissions in a way that puts Americans back to work, reduces our reliance on foreign oil and creates a healthier future for ourselves and our children. Today's action also makes clear that the Obama administration is doing its part to combat climate change. That amplifies our voice and strengthens our hand going into Copenhagen."
