Senate Right to Defeat Latest Attack on Our Public Health

WASHINGTON (June 9, 2011) – After the Senate today rejected an amendment by Senators Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, and Tom Coburn, R-Okla., that would have resulted in drastic cutbacks to consumer protections, Scott Slesinger, legislative director of the Natural Resources Defense Council, made the following statement:

“We are pleased that the Senate rejected attempts to weaken the government’s ability to protect us from health and environmental threats we can’t combat ourselves – such as contaminated water, tainted food and airborne toxins.

“This one-sided accounting, considering costs while all but ignoring benefits, hurts the public, not helps it.  Americans rightfully expect more from their elected officials.”
