Derek Murrow, Leading Energy Advocate, Joins NRDC as Federal Energy Policy Director

WASHINGTON (November 29, 2012) — Derek Murrow, a veteran energy policy advocate, has joined the Natural Resources Defense Council as director of federal energy policy, working to advance NRDC’s strategic policy goals for a sustainable energy future. He also will serve in a senior management role within NRDC’s Energy & Transportation Program.

Since 2003, Murrow served as Director of Energy & Climate Policy at Environment Northeast (ENE), where he played an instrumental role in expanding ENE’s energy and climate policy work. He is an official stakeholder to the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative and led efforts to advance a range of energy efficiency reforms in the utility sector. Murrow has worked extensively on energy and environmental issues in the private sector and in academia and currently serves on the DOE and EPA State Energy Efficiency Action Network, Executive Group.

“As we begin to see the ravages of climate change affect communities across the country, it’s clear that jump-starting federal clean energy and efficiency policies is more urgent than ever,” said Dale Bryk, NRDC’s Energy & Transportation program director.  “Derek is the clutch player we need to get the job done.  His experience, energy and enthusiasm will be critical to building consensus and effecting change.”

Murrow holds a bachelor's degree in geology from Carleton College and a master’s degree in environmental management with a focus on energy policy from the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies.
