NRDC Calls on Senator Steinberg to Keep California Climate Program Strong -- No Exemptions for Oil Industry

SACRAMENTO (February 20, 2014) – California Senate pro Tem Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) offered a proposal today that could exempt the oil industry from carbon pollution limits and jeopardize the future path of California’s landmark initiatives to combat climate change and advance clean energy.  At the same time, he also included a well-received call on the Legislature to extend California’s climate program beyond 2020 and provide assistance to low income Californians.

Following is a statement by Annie Notthoff, NRDC’s California Advocacy Director:

“California is a world leader in fighting climate change, and our efforts are generating results.  By cutting carbon pollution, we’re bringing much-needed clean energy dollars and jobs to our state, while improving the health of our communities. It’s time to build on that success, not offer exemptions to our comprehensive program. We stand ready to work with California’s elected leaders to ensure equitable implementation without compromising the foundation of our climate plan’s success.”
