NRDC Welcomes Change in Direction of Bill to Support California’s Climate Plan

SACRAMENTO (April 14, 2014) – California Senate pro Tem Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) today offered a new plan to invest auction proceeds from California’s groundbreaking clean energy law, the Global Warming Solutions Act (AB32.)

Following is a statement by Ann Notthoff, NRDC’s California Advocacy Director, regarding today's announcement:

“NRDC welcomes this positive change in direction. We support increased investments in California’s landmark sustainable communities law (SB375) designed to offer transportation choices, increase efficiency, and save Californians money. It was particularly good to hear Senator Steinberg’s commitment to include carbon pollution reduction targets out to 2050.”

“However, there is still work ahead to craft a more complete investment plan to decarbonize the transportation sector, including incoming Senate pro Tem Kevin de León's new measure (SB 1275). Championed by the Charge Ahead California Campaign, SB 1275 aims to clean up cars, trucks and buses, consistent with the state’s Greenhouse Gas Investment Plan.”

“It is critical to keep California’s largest emitters subject to mandatory carbon pollution limits to meet our climate goals, and we are on track to invest the carbon pollution reduction proceeds in communities that bear a disproportionate share of pollution (in line with SB 535).

“We look forward to continuing this important discussion with legislative leaders, Governor Brown and our partners around the state.”
