NRDC Lauds Obama Drilling Ban in Alaska’s Spectacular Bristol Bay

WASHINGTON (December 16, 2014)—The Natural Resources Defense Council today welcomed the decision by President Obama to withdraw permanently Alaska’s Bristol Bay from offshore oil development.  Bristol Bay supports the world’s largest salmon fishery, worth $1.5 billion per year, and is home to a vast array of marine life, including seals, otters, whales, seabirds and sea lions.

Peter Lehner, executive director of NRDC, made the following statement:

“The president has shown wisdom and vision in protecting this amazing region of the world from drilling. Bristol Bay is a national treasure, and for decades NRDC has worked to save it from this kind of harmful industrial activity.”
