Canadian Energy Policy Facilitates Tar Sands Pipelines, Not Carbon Reduction
WASHINGTON (July 17, 2015) – Canada’s 13 provincial and territorial premiers today issued a national energy strategy, after lengthy negotiations. While the premiers added new recommendations on clean energy and energy efficiency to a tepid commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the strategy continues to advance its carbon-intensive tar sands industry, emphasizing the need to expedite approval for new tar sands pipelines.
The following is a statement from Anthony Swift, director of the Canada Project at the Natural Resources Defense Council:
“Facilitating pipelines means committing to expand tar sands development, which is utterly inconsistent with Canada’s professed commitment to join the international community in combatting climate change. Canada needs to reduce, not increase, its carbon pollution. And that calls for a serious commitment from every province to make absolute reductions in carbon emissions. Canada is blessed with an abundance of clean energy sources that well positions it to play a leadership role in the global transition to a low carbon economy.”
