Gov. Brown Appoints New Coastal Commissioners – Signaling Commitment to Coastal Protection

SACRAMENTO — Governor Jerry Brown today appointed longtime progressive advocate Donne Brownsey and reappointed Effie Turnbull Sanders to the California Coastal Commission. Legislators voted this past fall to require inclusion of at least one commissioner who represents and works with communities most burdened by high levels of pollution.

Following is a statement from Ann Notthoff, director of California advocacy for NRDC:

“Californians are united: we want our coast protected. Access to coastal resources is important to all of us. Thousands of businesses, jobs and billions of dollars of economic activity depend on a clean coast and ocean.

“After a year of uncertainty and leadership changes on the Coastal Commission, it’s great to see Commissioners appointed who have a strong track record of progressive advocacy and action on behalf of underrepresented populations. This is a positive direction for the Commission and we’re excited that Effie Turnbull Sanders will continue and Donne Brownsey will join with new Commission chair Dayna Bochco and others to defend California’s coast.”
