New Leadership in Michigan Holds Promise for Big Changes to Clean Water and Energy Policies

LANSING, Mich. — The results of yesterday’s midterm election will impact the way Michigan addresses major environmental issues. The new leadership of Michigan’s executive branch should advance a much stronger environmental agenda. 

The following is a statement from Cyndi Roper, Michigan senior policy advocate at the Natural Resources Defense Council:

“Governor-elect Gretchen Whitmer’s new leadership should be the shift that Michigan needs to address some of the most serious environmental and public health issues facing the state.

“Michigan can now get to work implementing the strongest drinking water protections nationwide, and restore the damaged legacy left by the Flint drinking water crisis. It should also provide support for the bold commitments made by Michigan’s utilities to greatly reduce their carbon emissions and expand renewable energy.

“This election has given Michigan an opportunity to change course and lead on a host of environmental and public health issues. Now it’s time for these elected officials to put that change into action.”
