Trump Administration Attacks California over Climate Action in Western States & Quebec

SAN FRANCISCO – The Trump administration announced another lawsuit against the state of California today for participating in the Western Climate Initiative, a cap-and-trade emissions reduction program with western states and Quebec.

The following statement is from Peter Miller, the Western Region Director of the Climate and Clean Energy program at Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).

“This is another unwarranted attack on California’s environmental leadership. California’s partnership with Quebec in the Western Climate Initiative has been a model of cooperation between states and their counterparts in other countries in fighting climate change.  There is nothing to stand in the way of voluntary cooperation between American states and sub-national jurisdictions of other countries.  Science tells us that GHGs don’t respect state boundaries. To protect communities from climate change, all states must work collaboratively with other jurisdictions to fill the leadership void from this administration.”
