GM’s Electric-Vehicle Promises Are at Odds With Its Work to Gut Standards

WASHINGTON  – General Motors announced today that it would accelerate production of new electric vehicle models and make new investments in U.S. battery and vehicle manufacturing plants. The company's statement said nothing about its continued efforts to gut federal tailpipe emission and fuel economy standards.  

The following is a statement from Luke Tonachel, director for clean cars and clean fuels at NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council):

“While General Motors tells a nice story to Wall Street, it’s working hand-in-hand with the oil industry and the Trump administration to gut the clean car standards that will actually bring about the transition to zero-emitting vehicles.

“With a new administration coming to Washington, it’s time for GM to act on its promises for the future and support commonsense standards that will create jobs, cut costs for consumers – and put us on the path to make all new passenger vehicles pollution-free by 2035."
