House Legislation Would Gut Clean Water Act Safeguards

WASHINGTON (July 13, 2011) – By voting to pass H.R. 2018, a bill that guts the Clean Water Act, the House of Representatives would demolish the very foundation for safeguarding our rivers, wetlands, lakes and streams, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council.

The following is a statement by Steve Fleischli, a senior attorney in NRDC’s water program:

“The House has unleashed the single-worst assault on clean water protections in a generation—part of a broader, ill-conceived attack on our air, lands, water and wildlife.

“No wonder the White House said President Obama would veto this travesty of a bill. Similar bills deserve the same fate.”
