President Obama to Create Landmark National Ocean Policy

NEW YORK, N.Y. (July 19, 2010) – Press reports indicate that today President Obama will make environmental history by adopting the first-ever comprehensive national policy for America’s oceans, coasts and Great Lakes, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council.

A statement follows from Peter Lehner, Executive Director of the Natural Resources Defense Council:

“In the midst of one of the worst ocean disasters our country has ever seen, President Obama is providing hope for the future of our seas. Four decades ago, we provided protection for our air and water through the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. Today, we will have a comprehensive national policy for our oceans.

“With all of the pain and devastation in the Gulf of Mexico right now, this policy provides welcome good news for America’s oceans and those who depend on them. This is a great victory for everyone who treasures the wonder of the seas, who values ocean life, who flocks to the beach, who loves seafood, and who makes a living on or from the water.

“Just like a healthy person is better able to fight off an illness, a healthy ocean is better able to withstand threats it faces. From oil spills to disappearing fish, invasive species, polluted beach water, climate change and acidification, the threats are serious. President Obama is providing the oceans with a roadmap for recovery.”
