NRDC Comment to House Ways and Means Committee on NAFTA Enforcement

June 05, 2019

In response to its May 22 Trade Subcommittee hearing entitled “Enforcement in the New NAFTA”, NRDC and Sierra Club sent this joint letter to the House Ways and Means Committee urging the Committee to make strong and meaningful environmental enforcement a top priority in ongoing discussions regarding the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The letter identifies several ways the current version of the renegotiated NAFTA--the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) falls short of meeting basic environmental criteria. It offers a vision for a new, independent, and binding enforcement system to address environmental abuses and climate change.
