September broke the heat records in more ways than one. -

According to NOAA, not only was last month the hottest September since record-keeping began in 1880, but it also saw the largest departure from the average of any month in the 1,629-month dataset. The latest numbers make it even more likely that 2015 will be the hottest year on record (supplanting 2014). Mashable

Cuba launches shark-protection initiative. -

If approved by the archipelago's president, nearly 200,000 square miles of ocean will be free from fishing and extractive activities—making it the world's sixth-largest fully protected marine area. Last month, advocacy groups (including NRDC) criticized the world's largest fast-food chain for its failure to cut the drugs from its meat production. Today, Subway announced antibiotic-free chicken will be available in its stores in March, followed by turkey over the next few years, and pork and beef will join the drug-free club by 2025. Wall Street Journal
