Ryan Zinke confirmed as Interior Secretary

The U.S. Senate voted 68 to 31 to confirm Ryan Zinke as the new Secretary of the Department of the Interior. Zinke’s stance on the climate crisis is ever-changing, and his voting record in Congress—as a Republican representing Montana—shows him to be ardent fan of fossil fuel extraction and a foe of endangered species protections. The oil and gas industry has been Zinke’s single-largest donor over the course of his political career, which may explain why he’s championed dirty energy industries that push for more logging, drilling, and mining on public lands. Though he calls himself a “Teddy Roosevelt conservationist,” Zinke has earned a lifetime score of just 4 percent from the League of Conservation Voters. Given Zinke’s track record, it’s no wonder his many environmental critics are concerned that he will forsake natural resources stewardship to serve the White House’s pro-pollution agenda.
