Trump nominee for top USDA scientific post is…not a scientist

President Trump nominated Sam Clovis to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s top scientific post. Curious thing, though: Clovis is not a scientist. Instead, he’s a conservative radio show host who served as national cochair of Trump’s presidential campaign. Congress mandated in 2008 that the person appointed to this “chief scientist” position be “from among distinguished scientists with specialized or significant experience in agricultural research, education, and economics.” Not only has Clovis never published any scientific or academic work, he also considers climate change “junk science.” Of course, as USDA undersecretary, Clovis would oversee the agency’s research on—you guessed it—climate change.
