Coal advocates are pushing for the construction of more than 150 conventional coal-fired power plants across the United States. Yet coal has caused more widespread damage to our health and environment than any other energy source. Coal is the single largest source of global warming and mercury pollution. Coal mining destroys millions of acres of land and pollutes or destroys thousands of miles of streams. Coal plant emissions trigger asthma attacks in children and are linked to respiratory diseases that cripple and kill. Investing in dirty coal technologies to meet our energy needs commits our children and grandchildren to decades of environmental damage and disease. It is the most backward, dirty and costly path to choose.
