Secretary Salazar: It's Time to Protect the Polar Bear

Polar Bear Salazar Ad

Three years ago the Obama Administration lead the world in calling for increased protections for polar bears -- a species at the edge of extinction and yet still hunted commercially for its fur and its parts throughout much of Canada.  NRDC and our allies have called on the Obama Administration to show that leadership once again by proposing an international ban on the commercial trade in polar bear parts at the next meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and by working to build a winning coalition that will end the global trafficking of polar bear parts.

Unfortunately, it’s far from clear that the Administration will do so.  Right now, it is officially “undecided” about whether to try to protect polar bears.  It is therefore up to us, the American people, to convince the U.S. Department of the Interior to, once again, lead the way and protect these magnificent animals.

Hundreds of thousands of Americans have already written letters and emails urging an end to the commercial hunt.  And to make their voice even louder, today NRDC, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, and the Humane Society are taking out full page ads in Washington, DC, urging the Secretary of the Interior to champion polar bear protections.
