Stop Pebble Mine Ad Runs in The Hill

Ad Calls on EPA to Veto the Pebble Mine and Permanently Protect Bristol Bay, Alaska

A bipartisan coalition of local, state, national and international groups—representing Bristol Bay Tribes, commercial fishermen, sportsmen, businesses, and conservation organizations—ran a full-page ad in today’s edition of The Hill.

The ad—part of a broad, multi-week, multi-platform media campaign—urges EPA to veto the Pebble Mine and issue permanent protections for Bristol Bay. 

There is fierce opposition to the Pebble Mine and broad support for EPA action to protect Bristol Bay.

More than 270 Tribal, fishing, hunting, conservation, and business groups, including NRDC, support of the “Call to Protect Bristol Bay”—a vision of long-term protection for Bristol Bay issued by the Tribal and business leaders of the region.

The “Call to Protect Bristol Bay” urges (1) EPA action under Section 404(c) of the Clean Water Act to veto the Pebble Mine; and (2) Congressional action to create a National Fisheries Reserve in the Bristol Bay Watershed.

It recognizes that the permit denial issued last Fall is a temporary reprieve, not a permanent solution.

EPA must use its authority under Section 404(c) of the Clean Water Act to stop the Pebble Mine for good.

Issuing Clean Water Act 404(c) protections would answer the call for justice from Bristol Bay Tribes, indigenous communities, commercial and recreational fishermen, business owners, and conservationists.

EPA could deliver a win-win-win for environmental justice, the economy, and the environment. 

Urge EPA to act now. Urge EPA to stop the Pebble Mine and protect Bristol Bay.
