Ad in Politico Urges EPA to Veto Pebble Mine

Full-page Ad Calls for Permanent Protections for Bristol Bay

As part of a media blitz targeting Washington, D.C. lawmakers, groups ran a full-page ad today in Politico urging EPA to use its Clean Water Act authority to stop the Pebble Mine and permanently protect Bristol Bay, Alaska.

Bristol Bay is the world’s most valuable salmon fishery, generating $2.2 billion in annual economic activity, supporting 15,000 jobs, and supplying 57% of the world’s wild sockeye. Close to 60 million salmon returned to Bristol Bay last year alone.

Yet it remains at risk from the ongoing threat of the Pebble Mine – a giant gold and copper mine proposed at the headwaters of Bristol Bay’s legendary salmon runs.

While the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers denied Pebble Mine a permit last year to build its environmentally destructive monstrosity, that permit denial is a temporary reprieve and not a permanent solution. Indeed, Pebble is currently appealing that denial.

The permit denial also does nothing to prevent Pebble – or any other mining company – from applying for a new permit at any time.

Bristol Bay deserves permanent protection from the ongoing threat of large-scale mining.

Urge EPA to act now.
