The Home Depot to End Sales of PFAS-laden Carpet This Year: NRDC Reaction
WASHINGTON – The Home Depot has agreed to stop purchasing carpet that contains PFAS in U.S. and Canada by the end of this year. Scientists have long acknowledged a host of health harms associated with the class of “forever chemicals.” The move, the first of its kind by a major retailer, would close a significant source of exposure to the chemical present in homes throughout America.
The following is a comment from NRDC’s Director of Health Campaigns Sujatha Bergen:
“Home Depot is sending a message to the entire home goods industry and carpet manufacturers, making clear that these chemicals have no place in American homes. By stopping the sale of these carpets, retailers can shut down a major route of exposure to PFAS and all the associated health threats that come with it.
“Policy makers should follow Home Depot’s lead and ensure that all Americans are protected from this class of chemicals in all products—retailers and consumers alike are rejecting them.”
