House Panel Unveils Bold Climate Plan

WASHINGTON  – The House of Representatives’ Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, Chaired by Rep. Kathy Castor, today unveiled its bold plan to address climate change. It comes the same week the House is voting on the Moving Forward Act, a landmark infrastructure bill that includes important investments in clean transportation and water, as well as support for renewable energy.   

The following is a statement by Gina McCarthy, president and CEO of NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council):

“House leaders are rising to the challenge of the climate crisis and advancing solutions for a healthier, more prosperous and more equitable future.

“The plan released by Select Committee on the Climate Crisis bristles with bold solutions to the greatest environmental threat of our time. It would speed us away from fossil fuels and invest in a better future—one that will put more people to work in clean energy, reduce pollution in communities where it is the highest, and make our country more resilient to the challenges ahead.

“The House has an opportunity to put a down payment on those pledges this week as it considers an ambitious infrastructure bill. This measure would make much-needed investments in mass transit, pedestrian-friendly development and electric vehicle charging stations, while at the same time spurring clean energy deployment and addressing our aging water infrastructure.    

“This is the kind of leadership our country needs right now—putting the well-being of people, communities and our economy ahead of powerful polluters.”
