Do It Faster and Cheaper: NRDC Response to Ameren’s Carbon Report

CHICAGO (February 11, 2015) — Ameren released a report today highlighting their potential response to the historic Clean Power Plan to reduce carbon emissions from the nation’s electric generating sector. Following are comments in reaction From Rebecca Stanfield, Midwest policy director for the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC):

“Ameren’s report shows that they are ready to start tackling the issue of carbon pollution, but we think they can do it faster and cheaper. A deepened embrace of energy efficiency and renewable energy would speed their response and save Missourians real cash on their electricity bills.

“We disagree that more delay is needed for implementation of the Clean Power Plan – the EPA has already built in flexibility and up to 3 years additional time for states and power companies to fully develop their plans to reduce dangerous carbon pollution.

“We are in discussions with Ameren, stakeholders throughout the state and regulatory agencies regarding Ameren’s 20-year resource plan and its three-year energy efficiency plan. We look forward to working with Ameren to see if there are additional flexibility measures that can be incorporated to address their concerns without sacrificing the full potential to make their system cleaner, more resilient, more affordable and more reliable for the people of Missouri.”
